The ruling will have an impact beyond the Louisiana district, which likely explains the vote count, said CNN Supreme Court analyst Steve Vladeck. The Supreme Court has never defined what constitutes a “last-minute” election decision that should bar courts from weighing into such disputes. In a brief dissent, Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson said it was premature for the Supreme Court to intervene in the case. Louisiana came to the Supreme Court caught between two lower court orders. Two years ago, the Supreme Court allowed that map to be used in the midterm even though a lower court said it was likely illegal.

“Calculations that use a slightly larger radius for the size of the Sun yield an eclipse path that is slightly narrower,” said NASA spokesperson Karen Fox in an emailed statement. And even if the NASA map is wrong, Irwin’s calculations indicate it’s only off by a couple thousand feet on the edges. A woman views a map showing the eclipse path during the Solar Eclipse Festival at the California Science Center in Los Angeles, California, on August 19, 2017, two days before the total eclipse on August 21. Opinion | Surviving the Ugliness of It All
  + stars: | 2024-03-07 | by ( David Brooks | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
People are just tired out from the endless national crises, their dread of the 2024 presidential campaign, the ugliness of it all. Many people I talk with seem passive, discouraged, and are trying, mostly in vain, to shut out the political noise. It’s almost as if people have been so beaten down by the last decade, they’ve lost the self-confidence to wish for more. In these circumstances I turn to two leaders who knew something about projecting hope in exhausting times: Winston Churchill and Franklin D. Roosevelt. Churchill’s strongest sense was his romantic attachment to Britain’s past.

NEW YORK (AP) — Norman Jewison, the acclaimed and versatile Canadian-born director whose Hollywood films ranged from Doris Day comedies and “Moonstruck” to social dramas such as the Oscar-winning "In the Heat of the Night," has died at age 97. Throughout his long career, Jewison combined light entertainment with topical films that appealed to him on a deeply personal level. (Jewison lost out for best director to Mike Nichols of "The Graduate"). Among those who encouraged Jewison while making “In the Heat of the Night”: Robert F. Kennedy, whom the director met during a ski trip in Sun Valley, Idaho. Jewison shifted to feature films in 1963 with the comedy “40 Pounds of Trouble,” starring Tony Curtis and Suzanne Pleshette.

An Epic Pilgrimage Across Three Great Religions

Before there was tourism, there was pilgrimage: a trip of endurance, hardship and ecstasy in celebration of one’s faith. On an epic pilgrimage of his own, one writer ventures into the heart of three great religions in Bolivia, Mongolia and Iraq. The Imam Hussein shrine in Karbala the day after Ashura. “They’re poor, but they come thousands of kilometers for the love of Imam Hussein.” PILGRIMAGE WAS A great equalizer. “Labaik ya Hussein,” came the solemn chorus of surrounding voices.

No, not that border, and not today’s crisis, but the dispute that once raged over where Pennsylvania ended and Maryland began. This alien planet, Theia, was thought to have completely disappeared in the collision. AdvertisementAdvertisementAs well as shedding new light on the inner workings of our planet, scientists hope they will one day have access to these slabs of alien rock to reveal, once and for all, how our moon formed. The assumption has long been that Theia melded into moon, the Earth's mantle, and its core, in effect disappearing completely. Previous theories have suggested this core-mantle boundary could be made up of bits of ancient ocean floors. The problem is that the core-mantle boundary is very far from the surface — about 1,800 miles.

There is a thing that happens in cities — that we think happens in cities — when people with lots of different ideas bump into each other on the sidewalk, or at the bar or the grocery store or the gym. The urbanist icon Jane Jacobs identified these collisions as central to what makes cities dynamic. “The chance encounters facilitated by cities,” the economist Edward Glaeser has written, “are the stuff of human progress.”Remote work has, well, blurred this picture. How do workers spill their knowledge when they’ve moved to Montana, or the exurbs? “It’s a trying time, certainly, for my view of the world,” said Enrico Moretti, a Berkeley economist who has written extensively about why it’s good for workers, companies and the economy when people cluster in particular cities.

CNN —The United States has decided to send controversial depleted uranium munitions to Ukraine for the first time, as part of a new aid package worth more than $1 billion announced Wednesday. Here’s what you need to know about depleted uranium munitions – and why their use has sparked questions. What is depleted uranium? But depleted uranium is extremely dense, making it a highly effective projectile. When depleted uranium munitions strike a tank’s armor, it can ignite and produce uranium dusts or aerosol particles, which, if inhaled, can enter the bloodstream and may cause kidney damage.

We’re looking back at the strongest, smartest opinion takes of the week from CNN and other outlets. US oil prices are also set for a 3.9% gain this week, and have chalked up their longest rally since April 2022. So why are oil prices climbing? Oil output cutsAccording to the International Energy Agency, global oil demand is expected to rise by 2.2 million barrels per day to a record 102 million this year. But global oil production is forecast to rise by only 1.5 million barrels per day to 101.5 million, the agency said in a report this month. That failed to materialize, a factor that weighed on oil prices earlier this year.

Astronomers have spotted a "once-in-a-lifetime" comet shaped like the Millennium Falcon. The comet will make its closest approach to the sun next year, just weeks after a solar eclipse. The comet, known as Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks, abruptly brightened 100-fold on July 20 as plumes of debris and ice were blasted off it into space. But even though the scam targeted Morgan Stanley clients and the advisor admitted using a Morgan Stanley product to carry it out, the firm has fought efforts to hold it responsible. Reuters GraphicsAnalysts said the data underlined that once-booming ESG funds were no longer immune from wider market dynamics. BELOW PEAKNet assets across ESG funds fell in the second quarter and to below recent peaks, according to Refinitiv. Morningstar's global director of sustainability research, Hortense Bioy, said their preliminary data suggested demand for more stringent ESG funds appeared resilient. However, she said that managers' desire to meet European Union regulations had encouraged some firms to reclassify their ESG funds as traditional products, impacting investor flows. The anti-ESG backlash had also hit U.S. firms' appetite for marketing sustainable funds, "which has had an impact on sales," Bioy said on the sidelines of a conference this week.

Over time, Garnett’s detractors would make her out to be a prim and proper smotherer of the wild (male) Russian soul. In Russia, the abolition of serfdom was part of a series of reforms meant to stave off revolution. Stepniak wrote a profile of Zasulich for his book “Underground Russia” (1882), a study of the country’s new revolutionaries. In England, “Underground Russia” was a smash hit, going through three printings the year it was translated. In a 1991 biography of Constance, Richard Garnett, the pair’s grandson, writes that “the young lovers had a row about Land Nationalization.”

UK investors back money market funds in May, ditch ESG funds
  + stars: | 2023-06-06 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
LONDON, June 6 (Reuters) - UK investors backed money market funds in May at the fastest rate since the country's failed 'mini-budget' last year, opting for caution after a volatile period in global banking, funds network Calastone said on Tuesday. The data also showed that environmental, social and corporate governance-focused equity funds suffered their worst month on record, shedding 304 million pounds of capital. Investors added a net 318 million pounds during the month, half the average of the last year, Calastone said. Equity funds suffered net outflows of 302 million pounds, meanwhile, marking a sharp reversal after strong inflows in March and April. UK-focused funds were particularly hard hit, seeing outflows of 583 million pounds.

Gold slips as dollar advances with US debt talks dragging on
  + stars: | 2023-05-24 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
Gold slipped as the dollar firmed, cutting some safe- haven flows into bullion from the looming risk of a U.S. debt default as talks entered a critical stretch. "Overwhelmingly, the debt ceiling headlines are at play.... Gold gained in the previous session "despite headwinds from a rising broad dollar, which reveals notable demand behind the scenes." Wall Street's main indexes opened lower as the debt ceiling impasse kept investors on edge. If regional U.S. banking troubles were to subside and agreement reached over the debt ceiling, gold could fall further, said Edward Gardner, commodities economist at Capital Economics.

The seven most advanced economies in the world, the G-7, are discussing imposing sanctions on Russian diamond exports — a complicated measure that could potentially hike prices for the luxury commodity. Russia's diamond exports have largely been spared from international sanctions following Moscow's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February last year. In 2021, Russia raked in roughly $4.7 billion from diamond exports, according to data from the Observatory of Economic Complexity. Diamonds are not commonly traded like oil or gold, but they represent a large market that goes beyond jewelry. Some countries — such as Belgium, which buys a significant amount of Russian diamonds — want a "global approach" to Russian exports, as opposed to an EU-specific measure, to ensure the sanctions do not disproportionately hurt them.

A “15-minute city” is an urban planning model that envisions an environment where people can access amenities within a 15-minute walk, bike ride, or public transport journey from their homes. However, multiple experts who spoke to Reuters said the urban planning idea has been widely misinterpreted online. WHAT IS A 15-MINUTE CITY? Versions of a 15-minute city have been implemented in Paris and Melbourne, while other areas like Ottawa (here) and Scotland (bit.ly/3Hil13x) (page 61) have proposals in place. The 15-minute city is an urban planning concept that envisions a living environment with easily accessible essentials.
